2022 / multimedia

As a part of the YBCA10 cohort, each artist was tasked with creating work that responded to the issues affecting the community. From digital technology to climate change, artists explored their respective creative practices in concert with facilitating community conversations and activations throughout the 2021-2022 fellowship year.
Mahiwagang (magical in Tagalog) Libros is a work based on my fascination and love of magic, mythology, and language. It consisted of fabricating four hardwood podiums that were placed in the four directions within the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts gallery. Each rotated to whichever direction the reader (conjurer) wanted to both stand, read, and gaze into wooden sculptural piece carved and fashioned into a large grimoire that contained “spells” and a link to Mahika (a magical bot) that supplemented the physical installation. Below, you will find documentation of the work produced by the YBCA team that covers my purpose and intention for the work.
