Last night, I accompanied Danielle Siembieda, Community Engagement and Special Projects Manager for zero1, to Girl Geek Dinner (GGD) held at Perforce, a Tech company in (Downtown) Alameda, CA. Granted, it’s some distance away from Silicon Valley but seemingly filled with just as much energy and innovation (if not more). You can read more about Perforce’s revision control system here. Upon entering the GGD, friendly, smiling faces welcomed me (as well as a lot of pink and purple decor). In the main office downstairs, everyone was preparing…

I couldn’t resist. Yes, this post is about the Chia Pet (random, I know). For the holiday season, the company has made a Chia Pet out of the President. Quite frankly I’ve always wanted one just because it’s such a novel way of getting into horticulture. Okay, so that’s not exactly true but the prospect of plant and sculpture all-in-one is pretty neat. A bonsai tree is so much work but that’s the plant I really want! Anyway, the commercial served as a reminder to…

After reading an interview with creator of Colossal: Art & Design blog, Chris Jobson, on Hyperallergic, I have a bit more perspective on how to shape my blogging and art writing for the new year. It’s a relativitely short interview and quite informative if you’re looking into creating and building your own virtual space. I’m also taking a few days off from posting the heavy art musings since I’m working on a few pieces at the moment that require all of my brain cells! Thanks…

Artist: Chris Burden | Title: Through the Night Softly After seeing the performance pieces this past Sunday at the Ever After exhibition, I started thinking about how performance art has changed over the years. OFFSpace Founder, Kathrine Worel and I were talking about how there’s a fixation to document and showcase (as much as we possibly can). Being present (truly in the moment) without documentation is so difficult these days. I started thinking about Chris Burden’s work. Specifically, his work Through the Night Softly.…

More criticism, less support… In the past couple of years, I’ve found myself working with some really extraordinary writers, thinkers, and artists. They challenge what I say, what I think, and how I write. I must say, I went looking for these people. If one wants to be great, one ought to look for the people doing and creating phenomenal things as well as illuminating the public. Struggle, uncertainty, and failure is imperative. Yet, do Bay Area artists struggle to…
