This cartoon about blogging was originally published in the New Yorker in 2005 and created by Alex Gregory. Think about that…2005. Blogging has been around for decades though. Technology moves fast and I’m sure many of you weren’t on the internet as much in 2005 (or maybe you were, tech folks, obviously, but my mother – not as much). I’m not going to get into the technical history on this post but you can check out this CNET news article…

A writing practice requires a reading practice! I attended a Cherrie Moraga workshop the other week and this was one of the many pearls of wisdom she bestowed to participants. I couldn’t agree more. Reading different publications definitely helps me with my writing. Below, you will find some of my favorite print publications (yes, print still exists)…click on the image to visit the magazine’s website and enjoy!

Writing everyday for 365 days is taxing. Emotionally (dealing with insecurities), intellectually (doubting rationales, statements, learning facts, and thinking critically), and physically (yes, typing non-stop and editing for a few hours is hard on the hands and wrists and eye strain from the laptop). The experience has been both challenging and engaging. Challenging in that there’s ALWAYS something to write about but harnessing all of these nebulous thoughts swirling around in my brain on a daily basis can also be…

Independent scholarship has been difficult. Navigating through art history, criticism, and journalism without teachers to reign in all these ideas, fellow peers to test ideas, an editor reminding me of a deadline, and/or a project or paper due at the end of a few weeks makes for a challenging approach at scholarly research and constant engagement. Then again, this is MY forum and virtual space. Another issue that has come up for me – creating context. It’s only me writing and…

You do not need to leave your room. Remain sitting at your table and listen. Do not even listen, simply wait, be quiet, still and solitary. The world will freely offer itself to you to be unmasked, it has no choice, it will roll in ecstasy at your feet. ~Franz Kafka

Writing letters, drawing, doodling, and even your handwriting can become art. The documentary 1000 Journals includes interviews with individuals who have received and/or given away blank journals. The creator of the project, Someguy (yes, this is the name he goes by) is based in San Francisco thus tugging a bit at my heart-strings since I call this great city home. The distribution and circulation of the journals has been ongoing since 2000 and it has expanded to 1001 Journals! The…

My take on the 10 tips (specific to art writing and criticism)… 1. Cut the boring parts. = Talk about something exciting. If there’s a piece or a show that falls short, provide constructive criticism without being brutal. I mean, for goodness sake, artists do need to hear it when they haven’t pushed boundaries enough. Yet, writers need to be brave enough to say, “You didn’t make me feel what you were trying to execute”. 2. Eliminate unnecessary words. =…

Writing is easy: All you do is sit staring at a blank sheet of paper until drops of blood form on your forehead. ~Gene Fowler As we near the end of January 2011, the WordPress postaday challenge has me wondering what I want to accomplish. This blog isn’t just a blog. It’s an art diary. An online journal where I can say whatever I want and post whatever I want about something I’m extremely passionate about – Art. Artists. Art history. Art theory.…
