Artist: Chris Burden | Title: Through the Night Softly After seeing the performance pieces this past Sunday at the Ever After exhibition, I started thinking about how performance art has changed over the years. OFFSpace Founder, Kathrine Worel and I were talking about how there’s a fixation to document and showcase (as much as we possibly can). Being present (truly in the moment) without documentation is so difficult these days. I started thinking about Chris Burden’s work. Specifically, his work Through the Night Softly.…

More criticism, less support… In the past couple of years, I’ve found myself working with some really extraordinary writers, thinkers, and artists. They challenge what I say, what I think, and how I write. I must say, I went looking for these people. If one wants to be great, one ought to look for the people doing and creating phenomenal things as well as illuminating the public. Struggle, uncertainty, and failure is imperative. Yet, do Bay Area artists struggle to…

I couldn’t help it. I had to post an excerpt of Frank Lesser’s piece. I’m a huge fan of prose that capture the virtual behavior and etiquette (or lack thereof) even if the story is a bit outlandish. The funnier a story, the more truthful it is. Wouldn’t you say that’s true? So, TRUST ME…this is an incredibly great read and hilarious reflection on our post modern/hyper modern (a nod to a great artist) existence. —- Better Off as Friend-Requesters by Frank Lesser…

The percussed victims of the new technology have invariably muttered cliches about the impracticality of artists and their fanciful preferences. But in the past century it has come to be generally acknowledged that, in the words of Wyndham Lewis, “The artist is always engaged in writing a detailed history of the future because he is the only person aware of the nature of the present”. Knowledge of this simple fact is now needed for human survival. The ability of the…

My apologies for the poor resolution and clarity on these photos. I took them using my phone. Typically, I have a steady hand but I was in a hurry (especially taking the bumper sticker shot) and someone was waiting to use the restroom at the café. I had to post these photos because it reminded me of the alternative ways to communicate with people. Granted, you have a limited audience but these forms of communication will be around for some time…

In a culture like ours, long accustomed to splitting and dividing all things as a means of control, it is sometimes a bit of a shock to be reminded that, in operational and practical fact, the medium is the message. This is merely to say that the personal and social consequences of any medium-that is, of any extension of ourselves-result from the new scale that is introduced into our affairs by each extension of ourselves, or by any new technology.…

Over the weekend, I visited the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and saw The Matter Within: New Contemporary Art of India exhibition. I found myself making my way back to Sudarshan Shetty’s installation work. Both Untitled pieces (the above from his ‘Saving Skin’ series and the one below from his ‘Stab’ series) intrigued me. Although the mechanism tipped the pot back and forth with a constant, even rhythm that mimicked human movement, the piece presented tension and discomfort. The…
