Participating in the Big Art Group’s project, The People – SF, was a great experience. One of my dear childhood friends, Ricky Castaneda (fellow SF native and future lawyer) asked me to interview and discuss issues about community, democracy, war, and terrorism. Watching the opening night of The People – SF, I must say my favorite parts of the overall presentation involved hearing other locals’ thoughts on the aforementioned concepts. Truthfully, I wished the piece focused more on the interviews only because I found them the most provocative portions of the overall piece (NO, I did not want to see more of myself, just wanted to put that out there [Insert smiley face with tongue sticking out]). Rather, I wanted to hear more from the interviewees and hear their experiences and stories, which make San Francisco the vibrant and diverse place that cultivates a strong sense of community and awareness of these issues. Overall, I was/am proud I was able to represent my city ~ San Francisco.

What’s the biggest compliment (ever)?
Having your mentor say some really wonderful things about you. 🙂
Visual artist, Jenifer Wofford, was interviewed by artist and founder of Art of Hustle, Anthem Salgado a couple of months ago. Jenifer has been my mentor for the past few years and its been an incredible experience. Not only did she let me in on her art practice, experiences, knowledge-sharing about the art community, she helped me see my potential and all the possibilities around art writing and becoming an active member of the art community. Naturally, listening to the podcast, I was ridiculously honored when she mentioned our mentoring relationship during her interview and said some flattering things about me. It was such a phenomenal feeling.
Aside from Jenifer’s kind words and wisdom, once again, she introduced me to an invaluable resource – Anthem Salgado. I highly recommend you listen to his podcasts, read his posts, and access him via Twitter/RSS/Facebook ESPECIALLY if you’re an artist. Art of Hustle is fantastic and very much needed!!

Artists, Emmanuelle Namont Kouznetsov and Elyse Hochstadt certainly caught my attention when I read their request for participation in their latest work.
They are developing work around the current political climate. One piece is addressing the ever-changing status of women in culture and how the extreme right/religious right/Tea Party is changing not only legislation but undermining the overall perception of the role of women in society.
They are reaching out to friends and family and asking us to dig through our closets for those unused “work” pants.
Specifically, the artists are looking for the following:
Size doesn’t matter, but time does!! Please go check your closets and contact the artists with additional questions. The artists are also willing to arrange for a pick-up, if necessary.
Please contact Emmanuelle Namont Kouznetsov (Location: San Francisco) via e-mail at elle@emmanuellenamont.com
OR
Elyse Hochstadt (Location: East Bay) via e-mail at elyseh1@gmail.com
Donors will be acknowledged as a participants. The artists will keep everyone informed of the developments of the piece as well as where it will be exhibited. More to come…

It was a wonderful weekend connecting with great minds, seeing new art, and meeting artists at the Keeping an Eye on Surveillance opening over the weekend. I took some pictures and will be posting very soon. For now, take a look at one of the artists from the show – Jim Campbell. Highly intelligent and well executed concept. More to come!

What strikes me is the fact that in our society, art has become something which is only related to objects, and not to individuals, or to life.

OFFSpace, with guest jurors Lauren Davies (Kala Art Institute) and Robert Wuilfe (diRosa Foundation) are very pleased and excited to invite you to the opening reception for Ever After.
Here are the details:
WHERE: The Chapel of the Chimes Columbarium, 4499 Piedmont Avenue, Oakland, CA 94611
WHEN: Sunday, September 18th from 5-8pm
COST: this event is free and open to the public
FEATURING WORK BY
Voted Best of the Bay’s, “Best Place to Spend Eternity”, the Chapel of the Chimes is playing host to living artists with this first ever exhibition of visual art in the Julia Morgan designed chapel and columbarium in Oakland.
Most stories end with “happily ever after” — but the stories being told by artists in this show are using Ever After as a starting point. Poignancy, playfulness, and sharp insights into the nature of the Eternal are the common threads used to weave a series of site specific mini-installations through chapel niches. From the minimal to the Baroque, artists use these unique spaces to reflect upon notions of ritual, remembrance, loss and celebration with critical alacrity and humor.
There will be an evening of performance & sound works on Sunday, November 13th from 5-8pm–more on this later!
