Anais Nin once said that the role of the writer is to not to say what we can but to say what we cannot. The sentiment certainly translates well into the visual arts. Often, dishonesty abounds in everyday pleasantries, which is why the artist strives to reveal the truths of human interaction. To detect the context and sub-context. The artist mines the crevices of everyday exchanges and finds the raw, unpolished, sometimes tarnished, kernels of mundane gesture and speech to…

Regionlism is defined by the Merriam-Webster online dictionary as, “consciousness of and loyalty to a distinct region with a homogeneous population“. Well, I highly doubt the ‘homogeneous’ part. San Francisco is home to such a diverse population. In any case, I had the pleasure of attending the fourth official Upgrade SF meeting and the discussion entailed regionalism within the New Media Arts specific to the Bay Area. This past meeting included the following speakers: ZER01 Social Media Manager, Danielle Siembieda OFFSpace co-founder, Kathrine Worel Micaëla Gallery owner, Micaela van Zwoll Each presenter explained their role in the…

It is a great corner site, an exciting but exhausting gig painting in the micro climates of the scaffolding. Hot on one side and cold on the other. Sweet and sinister, everyday living mixed with screeches of pain. My favorite compliment this week: ”The Hummingbird is a motherfucking powerful bird.” ~Excerpt from Johanna Poethig’s Blog Bay Area visual, public, and performance artist, Johanna Poethig, created a blog to document the process of her latest mural project located in the Tenderloin district of San…

Future/Canvas 2 will be exhibiting digital artists at the Gray Area Arts Foundation for the Arts this June! As much as I love a good ole pencil to draw and brush to paint, the iPad artists showcasing at this year’s Future/Canvas will not disappoint. After viewing the Future/Canvas site, you will definitely want to see the works in person. Spread the word and engage!

Paid a visit to The Curiosity Shoppe on Valencia Street (San Francisco, CA) yesterday. It’s one of my favorite places. It’s a treasure trove of amazingness. I couldn’t walk out of the store without a new publication. I bought Average Magazine founded by artist, Kate Pocrass. One word: Brilliant. I don’t know how she would feel about this but it’s like the Seinfield (I’m a HUGE Seinfeld fan) of print. It’s about all of these, well, average things in life. For goodness sake,…

With all of the writing I’ve been doing the past few weeks, I figured I would treat myself to some unedited and unfiltered art reflection. Here goes… Sadly, I was unable to check out ArtPadSF. Looking at some of the pictures online (via San Francisco Art Beat blog), it would have been a real treat to see the overall layout and exhibitors at the Phoenix Hotel. Seeing each room set up as a gallery space and in a part of San…
